Skirt Becomes an Accessory Part I

While a skirt on its own is always pretty and feminine, it is not always the most comfortable piece. You can’t really compare it with trousers or jeans as far as comfort is concerned.

A new trend has emerged in the fashion world. No need to choose between the comfort of trousers and the prettiness of a skirt or dress anymore!

Skirt over pants

The possible solution is to wear both – pulled over pants, a skirt will update your look drastically and take your style to the next level!

Here, a skirt has nothing to do with utility, it is pure ornamentation. A skirt ceases to execute its main function and serves as an Accessory!

Skirt over pants

Actually, in some cases, one would argue, a pair of pants under the skirt keeps your legs warmer than tights, therefore, this super fashion-forward look is functional, also! But in the majority of cases, it’s just about a fancy element.

There are several techniques to wear the skirts-over-pants layering trend.

Skirt over pants

Skirts-over-dresses theme is worth mentioning as well as dress over pants. I am absolutely in love with the awesome ways how we can layer our bottoms.

One often hears women asking: what kind of dresses or skirts can be used for layering over the trousers?

Skirt over pants

Texture of the skirts: I personally love tulle skirts and dresses paired with jeans. If you do not want to go as far as to wear tulle items, you can use very light-weight, transparent fabrics for layering, which produces pretty much the same effect.

Alternatively, you can create layers with a denim skirt, leather skirt or a skirt with some classic iconic textile prints like Tartan (Burberry, Royal Steward), Pepita/Glencheck, Marine stripes, Paisley, Vichy etc.

Skirt over pants

I would not layer two fabrics that are equally tight and rigid, thought, because the whole look will be stiff and uncomfortable as a result. But: denim on denim option is also being suggested and seems to be successful.

What about the length? When building the layering look, you can use long skirts as well as very short ones. Generally, I would say, longer skirts can work better with skinnier pants.

As far as the silhouette is concerned, the key to making a layered outfit working is sticking to the harmonic line in the whole silhouette. Thus, you can use pencil dress over tailored trousers, or an A-form mini skirt over skinnies. But here, I would avoid categorizing and just consider each silhouette individually. There are no strict rules to this issue.

The colors you are using are also important; I would choose pieces in complementary colors for more of a cohesive outfit rather than play with bright colors all too much. Stick with a neutral color palette; instead, let the form and silhouette stand out and do the job.

In this look, I took a chance and combined classic jeans, blazer with a gorgeous asymmetric transparent skirt, that is very short on the one side and really long at the other – a very fancy one; I accessorized this outfit with long gloves, a beanie cap a scarf and a sweet faux fur purse.

One might argue, the skirt has no function in this outfit and is thus superfluous. But I think you will agree, that the semi-transparent long skirt turns this outfit into something special, very flattering and flowing silhouette makes the look much more attractive!

One thing that you should keep in mind is that you can use dresses that are usually worn for the evening or a party and interpret them anew in the role of Accessories. I did this trick with this skirt, which is actually a bottom part of a 2 pc. evening/party dress, transforming it into an Accessory in the streetstyle layered look.

De:

Skirt over pants

Skirt over pants

Skirt over pants

Skirt over pants
