Make Harness Wearable (At Last) Part I

[beitrag enthält markenanzeige/advertisement] I am now starting one of the most #fashionforward themes in Fashion – The Harness. The Body Harness is a chic, silhouette-defining piece now ruling on the runways and also infiltrating the street style scene.

Harnes dress

First of all I think Harness to be an absolutely fantastic, feminine and … enigmatic Accessory. But I still I have to say, I have a couple of problems with Harness, which prevent me from wearing it. Let’s try to find out together…

To begin with, I am not happy with it’s name. Why on earth did they call this Fashion Accessory  “Harness”? Harness is normally defined as “a set of straps and fittings by which a horse or other draught animal is fastened to a cart, plough, etc. and is controlled by its driver” More generally, Harness means “an arrangement of straps for fastening something”. The way Harness is normally translated in some other languages, for example, the Russian language  (“Portupeja”) sounds absolutely unaesthetic and unacceptable to me and even evokes some horrifying associations.

Harness

Interestingly, I used to experiment with what is now referred to as Harness long before it came to Fashion and I always called it “Belt construction” or “Set of belts”.

Why don’t we call it a “Multi-belt”, for instance? That would be my suggestion!

Harness

The further Problem with Harness is the fact, that this Accessory is often interpreted within one of the following style directions: Burlesque, Post-Apocalyptic, Burning man, Festival style, Gothic, Cosplay or – mostly – SM.

Now all these styles have one in common to me, that is – these are all styles that I try to stay away from.

Styling harness

Al last, the third problem that I am experiencing with Harness is, that most of the offered items seem to look too “aggressive”.

So I would like to try and find solutions to solve the style problems with Harness and present some looks that avoid the aggressiveness, staying neutral and mainstream stylistically, wearable.

Harness

So how can you wear Harness without looking post-apocalyptic?

My first advice sounds somewhat unexpected: opt for non-leather Harness versions. I really love Leather as a material, but I think harness made of leather seems even more aggressive and hard. I personally prefer Harnesses realized with “softer” materials like Neoprene or artificial leather.  In the outfit I am presenting today, you see Harness made of artificial leather (Fliotta, Online shop at www.fliotta.com). Of course, Harness will always be special, but I really think it looks less aggressive than it would do if it were a leather one.

Harness

My second advice as far as Harness styling is concerned, goes like this: try to wear it with classic items, which are not too crazy. Thus, you can avoid some stylistic misinterpreting and looking post-apocalyptic.

In this look, I combined Harness with a very moderate and romantic dress by Elsa Kelli (Online shop at www.elsakelli.com). The whole look is very classic and the color palette is soft and reduced.

Harness

One more tip: only wear Harness if this element is really necessary in an outfit, if you feel the outfit would otherwise be “empty”. This was clearly the case with my outfit: without the Harness, it looked very insufficient and pale. So the necessity of the Harness was more than obvious to me.

What do you think of the harness as an Accessory? How would you wear this new trend? Tell me in the comments and stay tuned for more Harness solutions!

Was halten Sie vom Gurtzeug als Accessoire?
